  • Doctor of Philosophy

    The Ph.D. is an advanced graduate-level study degree which includes a major research investigation and the writing of a thesis. The expectations include original scientific contributions to the field, and publications of the relevant findings in the open literature.

  • Master of Applied Science

    The Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) is a graduate-level study program that includes a research investigation and the writing of a thesis. The related research peojects are suitable for industrial collaboration and sponsorship (please refer to the MITACS/NSERC scholarships under Funding).

  • Master of Engineering

    The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) is a study program suited to students who wish to pursue their mechanical engineering education beyond the undergraduate level, but who do not wish to pursue a thesis research program.

  • Master of Engineering in Clean Energy

    This a new program intended for those with an undergraduate degree in engineering who are interested in advanced training related to environmentally-advantageous energy efficient technologies.   1. The Candidate

    Your postgraduate work represents a significant commitment. MASc. projects typically require two years of work, while PhD. research needs 3 years or more. In light of such an investment, it is essential to plan your research in the context of your long-term career. This is particularly relevant to PhD applicants.

  2. The University

    The admission to UBC is very competitive. It pays to familiarise yourself with the requirements and procedures. As a potential supervisor, Dr. Mérida cannot assist you unless the minimum requirements are fullfilled. Follow the links on the left for more information.

  3. The Department

    Visit the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Clean Energy Research Centre to learn about the different research areas and groups. Our ongoing collaborations with other departments and universities enable joint supervision for candidates with different backgrounds. If you do decide that MECH is for you, then contact our Graduate Program Office (secgrad@mech.ubc.ca) to learn about admission procedures and deadlines.

  4. The Group

    Once you have a clear idea of how to complete the application processes, we will be happy to discuss possible research areas. We will also assist you in the preparation of scholarship applications.

  • Research Assistanships

    A limited number of research assistanships are available. However, most of our graduates have secured funding for their research. We support scholarship applications and our industrial interactions enable sponsored research projects.

    Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) provide financial support to the most outstanding eligible students pursuing master's or doctoral studies in a Canadian university. More...

  • Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS)

    Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) provide financial support for highly qualified science and engineering graduates. The support allows them to gain research experience in industry while undertaking advanced studies in Canada.
